I first met Roy last year when he invited me to visit his stand at the Tranoï Show in Paris. It was a serendipitous moment—I was already planning a trip to the City of Lights to attend other events and catch up with friends.
Roy is Scandinavian, like my father—the difference being that Roy is Danish while my dad is Swedish, but that’s just a fun detail since both languages are closely related, and largely mutually intelligible - add jewelry to that and we're a go!
Back to my visit to Tranoi, as soon as I found Roy's stand, I was absolutely blown away by the stunning pieces he was showcasing. There’s such a difference between seeing jewelry online and experiencing it in person—picking it up, trying it on, feeling its weight and texture, and admiring the way it sparkles. I must say it was a huge treat to see his work up close and also talk to him about jewelry, his processes and inspirations.
Roy’s work is completely my cup of tea. I’m drawn to imperfect perfection, rich textures, and bold, intricate statement pieces—and his designs capture all of that. His style strikes a rare balance of elegance, beauty, and strength. I honestly wish I could wear all of his rings—especially the chonky ones, which are my favorite!
We’ve stayed in touch since that first meeting in Paris, and I’m so happy to have him share his story today. Tack så mycket!
I am a graduate of the Danish Design Academy and have had a long career in fashion. Years ago, I relocated to Paris to take on the role of Design Director at the house of KENZO, where I worked closely with Kenzo Takada for a decade before launching my own fashion brand.
Jewelry has always been a significant part of my creative expression alongside fashion, but it wasn't until 2022 that I decided to launch my jewelry brand.
KUNDO JEWELS was born from my passion for ancient jewelry and the tribal art
of African, Asian, and Indian subcultures, reinterpreted and designed for the modern world. Every piece is handcrafted, distinctive, and unique.
The diamonds and other gemstones I use are natural and in their purest form ranging from raw and uncut to artisanally faceted without any chemical enhancements.
My fascination with diamonds and other gemstones began years ago, during my first encounter with some old, exquisite royal jewels adorned with Golconda diamonds in India.
The Golconda mines were the first known source of diamonds and remained an important site for many years. Some of the world's most famous diamonds, including the Koh-I-Noor and the Hope Diamond, were discovered there. It was the artistry of Indian craftsmen and cutters that laid the foundation for their enduring global allure.
In my own work, I primarily use silver, occasionally accented with touches of gold. I find the silver color more beautiful, authentic, and understated than gold. I especially love how it tarnishes over time, taking on a deep, almost black hue that tells its own story.
I'm not drawn to perfectly crafted, almost industrial-looking jewelry, it often lacks soul and a sense of history. I prefer pieces where you can see and feel the presence of the craftsmen's hands, with slight imperfections that add character.
I divide my time between Paris and Jaipur, where I work closely with exceptionally skilled artisans in the atelier. These craftsmen use ancient techniques, many of which have long been forgotten, to bring each piece to life. I also spend a great deal of time researching and sourcing rare treasures, old and new, from gemstone and pearl dealers to incorporate into my designs.
KUNDO JEWELS is today available in edgy, forward-thinking concept stores and jewelers around the world.
